Fuel Price Hike Protest: Congregation of 1Million Malaysians - by Torque

The grand finale of the price hike protest series is a gathering of supposedly 1 million Malaysians to show their disagreement on the price increment. The event took place at the MPPJ Stadium, Kelana Jaya, on the 6th July 2008, from 7am till almost 12midnight. However, due to the extensive time frame, the actual peak of the event was right after 830pm when the core leaders of PKR took the stage and emotions & response from the protesters soared.

Pulau Ketam - by The Torque

Located near to the offshore of Selangor, Pulau Ketam is one of the easily accessible fishing haven for weekend anglers. Thus, the main source of income for the villagers would relates to fishing.

Chinese are the main ethnic on this island - since the founders of this island according to history were three Chinese fishermen way back in 1870's.

~The infamous Fire Brigade Building, coupling as an "arch" welcoming visitors on the main street

There are two residential areas on this island - Pulau Ketam village & Sungai Lima village - build above the swamp land and interconnected with a maze of wooden & concrete platforms.

Bicycles would be the main transportation mean on the dry area, otherwise, boats are used to travel around the island and commuting between the villages.

Though famous for its Chinese cultural celebrations, there are Chinese Muslims (converts) on this island, a unique minority.

Uncle Mohamad Ong Abdullah is one of them. Originally a Johorian born in 1949, his ID validates him as a Muslim. He was kind enough to invite us - the Rebanists who went to do a Photojournalism Workshop in Pulau Ketam recently - to his house and insisted us to take some shots of himself wearing a "kopiah".

Ironically, the actual practicing of the religion is not evident - the common case with most of the converts. Questionably, there would be a prayer altar in many (if not all) of the houses of these converts.

Mee Mee Tailor - by Damak Digital

Mr Lau is 76 years old. At this age, his eye sight is worsening thus he couldn’t do much sewing.

He came from Tanjung Malim, Perak and started his journey in tailoring business in Sekinchan as an apprentice at a small tailor shop.

At the age of 30, he migrated to Batu 9, Hulu Langat and started his own tailor shop and he’s been running the show ever since.
He commences business at 7 am and close at 4pm depending on his health. Nowadays, an income of RM250-350 in a month is something to celebrate.

Comes 2009, this whole stretch of old shop houses will be demolished in order to cater for the widening of a nearby road, which currently cannot support the flow of the increasing traffic.

Sadly, when the time arrives for the government to take over this property, Mr Lau has nothing in plan. Simply because he is just too tired to continue his business and furthermore, none of his children are interested to inherit the legacy which he has painstakingly crafted.
