Pulau Ketam - by The Torque

Located near to the offshore of Selangor, Pulau Ketam is one of the easily accessible fishing haven for weekend anglers. Thus, the main source of income for the villagers would relates to fishing.

Chinese are the main ethnic on this island - since the founders of this island according to history were three Chinese fishermen way back in 1870's.

~The infamous Fire Brigade Building, coupling as an "arch" welcoming visitors on the main street

There are two residential areas on this island - Pulau Ketam village & Sungai Lima village - build above the swamp land and interconnected with a maze of wooden & concrete platforms.

Bicycles would be the main transportation mean on the dry area, otherwise, boats are used to travel around the island and commuting between the villages.

Though famous for its Chinese cultural celebrations, there are Chinese Muslims (converts) on this island, a unique minority.

Uncle Mohamad Ong Abdullah is one of them. Originally a Johorian born in 1949, his ID validates him as a Muslim. He was kind enough to invite us - the Rebanists who went to do a Photojournalism Workshop in Pulau Ketam recently - to his house and insisted us to take some shots of himself wearing a "kopiah".

Ironically, the actual practicing of the religion is not evident - the common case with most of the converts. Questionably, there would be a prayer altar in many (if not all) of the houses of these converts.

Recent Work: Pulau Ketam Revisited 2008

Do some photoshoots during my 4th visit at Pulau Ketam, Klang. We had our 2 days workshop on Photojournalism and Documentary assignment, lead by Shamsyarin Shamsudin of EPA and Rahman Roslan of Majority World and organised by Chaps Photographers. So here is some of my shots of that day.

An old man having his relaxing time in front of the house, watching people goes by in everyday life and their is not much you can do when you're living in Pulau Ketam.

This boy is actually playing hide and seek with his friend, peeping constantly behing the door, i just waiting for the right moment to shot this.

This fisherman is knitting his net, fisherman is a main job for this island due the location is far from mainland which is 45 minutes away by boat and the nearest jetty is in Pelabuhan Klang (Port Klang).

Traditional Boat Makers, Pulau Duyong, Terengganu, Malaysia.

Pulau Duyong or Mermaid Island are consist of Pulau Duyong Besar (big) and Pulau Duyong Kecil (small). They are actually not really an island instead both are two peninsular that extends from the mainland and river towards the sea. Pulau Duyong Besar is the home of the most famous master boat makers and the oldest traditional boat making in Malaysia and is already an international tourist destination.Pulau Duyong which is only a few hectares big sits between The Sultan Mahmud Bridge and Kuala Sungai Terengganu making it easily accessible by road or river.Traditional Boat Making Terengganu's world-famous traditional boat makers in Duyong Island are known to build row boats, deep-sea fishing boats and luxury yachts from memory and experience, and without blueprints and nails! Visitors can stroll from one workshop to another to see the craftsmen at work. The island is easily accessible via the Sultan Mahmud Bridge or a short boat ride from the Kuala Terengganu waterfront.
The island has gained worldwide recognition as a centre for traditional boat making. The boats are built without the use of blueprints or plans. Everything was done by hand and surprisingly, there were few modern equipment used. It’s true indeed that they don’t use a single blueprint or plan to build a vessel, be it a giant trawler or a luxury yacht destined for foreign shores! All a master craftsman needs to know is the type and size of vessel. He then draws on his vast experience and photographic memory to begin his work. Even in this day and age, well-worn traditional tools like axe, saw, plane and hammer are the main tools of the trade.
Boat builders prefer to make use of the local high quality Cengal wood (neo balanocarpus), Penaga wood (mesua ferrea) for the dowels. Kulit gelam (tree bark-melaleaca leucadendron) is used for caulking, the water proof packing pressed between the planks. The Cengal wood planks were left under sun for several months before use. This rendered Cengal wood lighter, easier to work and less liable to warp.
Normally boat builders take about two years or tree years to finish their job and the costs to finish the boat around RM 2 billion to RM 3 billion, depends on boat size, woods and any special request. Feel free to visit Pulau Duyong before all the herritage gone .

Pontianak

“Pontianak” is one of the most famous, scariest and violent ghost in the Malaysian culture. Primarily, the Malays believe that it originates from a still born child, women who dies while giving birth, women who were killed by the pontianak or their spirits captured by them. The phrase “Pontianak” was believed from the acronym of “Perempuan Mati Beranak” in the Malay language, meaning the woman death by childbirth.
